Our Up-and-coming perspective on “Oxygen sponges for electrocatalysis: Oxygen reduction/evolution on nonstoichiometric, mixed metal oxides” was featured as the cover art of the June 26, 2018 issue of Chemistry of Materials.

About the Cover: Nonstoichiometric mixed metal oxides present promising alternatives to precious metal electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction/evolution: important electrochemical reactions for energy conversion and storage. While promising, systematic optimization of their activity has been hindered by difficulties with probing their surface structure as a function of composition and reaction conditions.  This Perspective highlights the significance of approaches where theoretical calculations are combined with well-controlled synthesis, detailed characterization, and testing toward the development of universal structure-performance relations to effectively guide their activity optimization.  The artwork (by Samji Samira and Juliana Carneiro) illustrates the need for surface structure to activity correlations to successfully implement nonstoichiometric mixed oxides as electrocatalysts in fuel cells/electrolyzers. For more information, see “Oxygen Sponges for Electrocatalysis: Oxygen Reduction/Evolution on Nonstoichiometric, Mixed Metal Oxides” by Xiang-Kui Gu, Samji Samira, and Eranda Nikolla* (Chem. Mater. 2018, 30, DOI: 10.1021/acs.chemmater.8b00694).

Our publication on “Efficient Oxygen Electrocatalysis by Nanostructured Mixed-Metal Oxides” was featured as the supplementary cover art of the July 05, 2018 issue of JACS.

About the Cover: Oxygen electrocatalysis is important for enhancing the efficiency of energy conversion and storage devices. This artwork (by J. S. A. Carneiro) illustrates enhanced oxygen electrocatalysis, consequently fuel cell performance, on nonstoichiometric, mixed metal oxides through engineering of their surface structure and composition.
